Digital Television - Facts
Digital choices are still limited - today only
around 73% of UK households are able to
access the full range of digital terrestrial
television services (digital TV through an
aerial). This figure cannot be increased
before digital switchover.
To ensure that all UK households can benefit
from the digital future, the Government has
confirmed that all television broadcasting will
be switched to digital between 2008 and 2012.
This switchover will occur in stages, by ITV
regions, across the UK.
After switchover, households will get all the
channels they receive today, together with a
choice of additional digital channels and
services.
Households can access digital television in the
UK through a satellite (digital satellite), cable
(digital cable) or aerial (digital terrestrial), or
though their telephone line (broadband DSL).
Options for receiving digital television include
having an integrated digital television (an
iDTV) or adapting the existing TV set with a
digital box (the digital box can be a digital
terrestrial, digital cable, digital satellite or
broadband DSL one)
Digital TV offers viewers many advantages -
more choice, access to more services and a
better quality viewing experience.
An increasing number of consumers are
listening to radio via digital television; 29%
of adults have listened to radio via digital
television.
