what do i have to do to get digital tv?
The ways to receive digital TV today are:
1. Through an aerial "digital terrestrial" - digital TV can be accessed through an existing terrestrial aerial. This can be done by connecting any analogue TV set to a digital box or by buying and installing an Integrated Digital Television (a TV which has the adaptor built inside) to view the services offered.
Digital terrestrial services are offered as free to view with additional services available on a subscription basis.
2. Via satellite "digital satellite" - free to view or subscription services can be accessed using readily available equipment - a satellite dish attached to the outside of the home and a digital box connected to the TV set is required.
3. Via cable - "digital cable" - subscription services are available via cable, and are often bundled with telephony and Internet services.
Digital cable coverage is good in most urban areas across the country. Some cable providers are still in the process of final digital upgrades
to their original analogue cable systems - these upgrades will not require consumers to get new equipment.
4. Through a telephone line - "Broadband / DSL" - digital television can also be received via subscription over a broadband connection line which utilises existing telephone access.
Some providers bundle digital TV services with telephony and Internet services. At present this option is geographically limited, but given
that the vast majority of UK households are connected to the telephone network, it has the potential to grow rapidly.
Most householders will be able to use their existing aerials to receive digital terrestrial services, however, some may need to have new
aerials or cabling installed to receive all services.
For example, if when receiving digital TV services through an aerial households have reception problems despite being in a coverage area, they will need to check the suitability of their existing aerial.
A reputable aerial installer will be able to advise whether your aerial is suitable. For more information is please visit:
